Water Jet Cutting is a perfectly safe and desirable method for cutting exotic materials such as granite and marble aside from being able to handle stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, ceramic and tool steel among others. Unlike with other cutting methods, the benefit of using water jets to cut stone such as marble or granite is the fact that no thermal stress occurs in the stone thanks to this cold process. The
water jet process uses jets of pressurized liquid as high as 60,000 pounds per square inch, often water mixed with an abrasive substance to cut through material. Even though the kinetic energy generated by the water jet is considerable, it doesn’t cause structural damage along the edge being cut, and water jets do not apply any tangential forces on the material. Water jets allow for incredible results creating smooth edges with no burrs.
